Colombo FC – 3rd Place
The reigning champions were one of the favourites to win the tournament this year but they only managed to finish third in their group which was enough to qualify for the Super 8s.
The real Colombo FC unleashed themselves in the Super 8s as they were top of the table most part of the super 8s but it all got crashed when they met Blue Star and lost 1-0 in a rain affected match. This defeat forced them from first to third with one game week to go.
They will meet the current table toppers Renown SC in the Final game week and it’s a do or die game for them. Winning the game vs Renown SC is a must for them to win the title but it all depends on the match between Blue Star vs Army as well. If Blue Star wins that game the boys from Kalutara will go top with 17 points. In a such a situation even a win vs Renown will only earn them 16 points finishing 2nd. Therefore to win the title Colombo FC should beat Renown SC and also expect Kalutara Blue Star to lose or Draw vs Army SC. Following are all the possibilities for Colombo FC
Kalutara Blue Star SC – 2nd Place
They were 4th in the same group Colombo FC became 3rd during group stages. The only club this season to qualify for Super 8s with a negative goal difference. Yes they qualified for the super 8 with a goal difference of minus 2. But in Super 8 it was a different story. They started with a 2-0 victory in the Super 8s but not many considered them as favourites to win the title especially when they could earn only a draw in game weeks 2 and 3.
But outta nowhere their winning streak started winning 3 in a row which included wins vs Giants Colombo FC & Solid SC who were favourites for the title at one point. Kalutara Blue Star can be considered giant killers as they have beaten Renown & Colombo FC. The win vs Colombo FC pulled the reigning champions from 1st to 3rd which gave the boys from Kalutara to go up to 2nd and a shot at the title.
They will play FA cup Champions Army SC who are fourth on the final day. A win is a must for them to win the title but they also have to wait for the end of Renown SC vs Colombo FC to see whether they have completed one of the best come backs in Sri Lankan league history. For Kalutara Blue Star to win the title Renown should lose or draw vs Colombo FC. A win for Renown will end their title dreams. Following are all the possibilities for Kalutara Blue Star.
Renown SC – 1st Place
They were 1st in their group during the group stage with a massive 5 point lead and a goal difference of 21. They were considered the favourites for the title but the defeat vs Blue Star in the first game week of Super 8 took a hit in their title hopes. They came back strong in Game week 2 and since then haven’t lost a single game and had a tight fight for the top spot with Colombo FC. The defeat of Colombo FC vs Blue Star helped Renown to go top with one game week to go.
Renown will play Colombo FC on the final day and if Kalutara Blue Stars beat Army it will be a must win game for them. If Blue stars lose to Army even a draw is enough for them to win the title. Following are all the possibilities for Renown SC.
