Dramatic footage has been released showing the moment Hope Solo was told she had been terminated from the U.S. national team for calling her Swedish opponents ‘a bunch of cowards’. The release of the video on Tuesday came as the beleaguered goalkeeper announced her departure from the Seattle Reign, after she was granted indefinite personal leave at the weekend. Solo made the comments about the Sweden after the Americans were eliminated in a penalty shootout from the Rio Olympics women’s soccer tournament on August 12. Now video has been released of her reaction at being kicked off the national team, as cameras were rolling at the time on upcoming documentary Keeping Score.
Solo is heard snapping in the clip: ‘Six months suspension, no pay. Terminated contract… effective immediately.’ She then reiterates: ‘Terminated contract, not just a suspension!’ The player is seen in a conference room with her husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens, who moves in to hug her. Stevens asks about the suspension and termination: ‘How can they do both?’. An emotional Solo then replies: ‘It’s both. Seventeen f****** years and it’s over!’ . The cameras of Keeping Score were following the lives of three US women’s players.
