Valencia 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Rodrigo cancels out Angel Correa opener as Michy Batshuayi makes his debut for the hosts in draw with Diego Simeone’s men. Valencia and Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw at the Mestalla on Monday. Atletico forward Angel Correa gave the visitors the lead in the 26th minute. But Spain international Rodrigo equalised after the break to secure a point. Daniel Wass missed a big chance late on for Valencia as it finished honours even. Michy Batshuayi, on loan from Chelsea, made his debut for the hosts in the game.
Greuther Fuerth 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Axel Witsel scores injury time equaliser before Marco Reus bags 120th minute winner in German Cup. Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund teetered on the brink of elimination in the German Cup first round against second-tier Greuther Fuerth before staging a late comeback to win 2-1 after extra time on Monday. Midfielder Sebastian Ernst put the second-tier side ahead in the 77th minute. New signing Witsel levelled in the fifth minute of second-half added time. Reus got the winner in stoppage time at the end of the second half of extra time.
Real Madrid 2-0 Getafe

Gareth Bale scores on third consecutive opening day and Dani Carvajal also on target as Julen Lopetegui earns first win with comfortable victory at the Bernabeu. Dani Carvajal opened the scoring with a looping header from Gareth Bale’s deflected cross after 20 minutes. Shortly after half time Gareth Bale slammed home Marco Asensio’s cross to seal the victory. Bale and Asensio hit the bar in either half for Madrid as they bounced back from Super Cup defeat with win. Thibaut Courtois only made the bench for Real Madrid, with Keylor Navas retaining the No 1 jersey in goal.
Dzeko’s late goal saves Roma, Sassuolo upset Inter
Edin Dzeko scored a late stunning goal to snatch a 1-0 win for Roma at Torino in their opening Serie A game on Sunday. The match appeared headed for a 0-0 draw with only two minutes remaining. But Roma debutant Justin Kluivert — who had been brought on in the 70th minute — went past several defenders before putting in a pinpoint cross for Dzeko to volley in under the crossbar from a tight angle.
Dzeko had hit the upright twice. Aleksandar Kolarov had also hit the woodwork for Roma, as had Tomas Rincon for Torino. Torino had a goal disallowed on video review early in the second half as scorer Iago Falque was marginally offside. Roma finished third last season, 18 points behind champion Juventus and five above fourth-place Inter Milan.
Inter’s expensively assembled squad were dealt a heavy dose of reality in a 1-0 defeat at Sassuolo in their Serie A season opener on Sunday. Plenty is expected of Luciano Spalletti’s side following an influx of fresh faces but they appeared disjointed against a team that finished seven places below them last season. Punishment came in the shape of Domenico Berardi’s 27th-minute penalty and it was all a counter-attacking Sassuolo needed to notch a seventh victory in 11 league meetings between the pair.
The Nerazzurri’s highly anticipated attacking partnership of Mauro Icardi and Lautaro Martinez failed to threaten, with the injured Radja Nainggolan sure to be rushed back as soon as possible to shore up an unsteady midfield. The hosts did not have to wait long for a deserved lead, though, as Berardi converted from the spot in the 27th minute, Miranda having clumsily bundled over Federico Di Francesco. Ivan Perisic stepped off the bench at the break but it was Matteo Politano who looked the most likely to conjure an equaliser against his former side, the winger flashing a fierce drive across the face on the hour.
Clearer chances soon came at both ends with Kevin Prince-Boateng brushing the outside of the near post with a clever first-time effort, before Icardi side-footed a low Perisic cross over the bar. Stefan de Vrij threatened to snatch a point in stoppage time, but his header from Politano’s delivery was impressively parried by Andrea Consigli as Sassuolo clung on.
Barcelona 3-0 Alaves

Barcelona kicked off the defence of their La Liga title with a 3-0 win over Alaves at the Camp Nou on Saturday. Ernesto Valverde’s men found it tough going but once again Lionel Messi provided the inspiration with a clever free-kick which hit the crossbar towards the end of first half on Saturday evening. The hosts brought on Philippe Coutinho at the start of the second half after the first period ended all square Forward.
Messi broke the deadlock in the 64th minute of the La Liga clash with a free-kick under the wall. It was Barcelona’s 6000th goal in La Liga. Nine years ago Messi had scored the club’s 5000th goal too. Coutinho doubled Barcelona’s lead seven minutes from time with a curling effort into the far right corner. Messi scored his second and Barcelona’s third in stoppage time to round off the victory at the Nou Camp.
Chievo 2-3 Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo debut ends in victory as Federico Bernardeschi grabs extra-time winner following equaliser from returning hero Leonardo Bonucci. Cristiano Ronaldo made his competitive debut, starting up front following his £100m move from Real Madrid. Sami Khedira opened the scoring after just three minutes by lashing the ball from after a freekick came in.
Chievo fought back and Mariusz Stepinski glanced an expert header from a deep searching cross to level. They then went ahead after new boy Joao Cancelo gave away a penalty and Emanuele Giaccherini converted. Leonardo Bonucci pulled Juve back into the game on his homecoming appearance following a summer return. Mario Mandzukic thought he had headed home a late winner for Juve but it was quickly ruled out by VAR. The day was saved by Federico Berardeschi who slotted the ball home deep in extra-time to seal a late victory.
